Public street lighting remote management

A well-lit city isn't managed in the dark.

The state of your lighting changes every minute: power outages, vandalism, voltage spikes, repairs and unrecorded replacements. Smartmation gives you a living picture of your entire infrastructure, so you can act before residents complain.

The problem

Street lighting is a movie in constant motion

Keeping a city lit is a task as vast as the city itself. Tens of thousands of luminaires spread across several km² must be managed, and their condition is constantly changing.

01

The real status is unknown

Without data, it's impossible to be certain about the infrastructure, the fault history or how field crews are performing.

02

Management is reactive

Teams react to resident complaints or field inspections, which are costly and inefficient. By the time a problem is visible, it has already been there far too long.

03

"If it isn't known, it didn't happen"

A dangerous belief takes hold. Invisible faults erode service, safety and public trust.

How it works

From every luminaire to the control center, in real time

Each luminaire or cabinet incorporates a device that measures its operating parameters and reports them to a control center where the entire street lighting network is operated.

  1. 01

    Field devices

A luminaire controller node (individual remote management) and a cabinet controller (group remote management) measure and report live.

  2. 02

    Cloud servers

Cloud infrastructure (AWS) that receives, processes and safeguards the data from the entire network in a secure, scalable way.

  3. 03

    Software platform

A suite of web and mobile apps to analyze and manage the infrastructure, with automatic alerts and work orders.

Results

The cities that adopted remote management are seeing the light

80% of work orders are generated automatically
80% improvement in out-of-service times
35% savings in maintenance costs
15% additional electricity savings from dimming
40% fewer complaints in remotely managed areas
10:1 lower likelihood of faulty equipment (2% vs 20%)
“The early alerts the remote management system provides let us know whether luminaires are off or faulty without having to wait for residents to file a complaint or for the field inspection crews' reports to come in.”
Magdalena Aybar Director of Street Lighting · City of Buenos Aires
